SpikesFest 2011

by April on February 3, 2011

I personally am loving that the Spikes season is only a little over 4 months from Opening Day! This is a great (and frugal!) family event for our area. Plus…the closer to Opening Day, the closer to Spring!

Central PA’s Best Family Value, the State College Spikes, has announced the date for the club’s annual winter family carnival event known as SpikesFest.

SpikesFest 2011 presented by WTAJ, Your News Leader, will take place Saturday, February 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Penn State Multi-Sport Facility, located adjacent to the Bryce Jordan Center. Parking and admission are both free.

Now in its fifth year, SpikesFest is a giant indoor baseball carnival for individual fans and families, featuring free autograph sessions, prizes, inflatable games, kids activities, appearances by Ike the Spike, the Nookie Monster, Bob the Baseball Dog, the Pirate Parrott and other mascots, youth player and coaching clinics, unique experiences and much more.

Fans attending this year’s event will also have the first opportunity to meet new Spikes’ manager Dave Turgeon, who was announced as the club’s skipper in December. Turgeon will be in attendance to meet and greet fans, sign autographs and participate in fan Q&A sessions.

Also appearing will be 2008 Spikes infielder and Pirates’ minor league prospect Matt Hague. Other player and special guest appearances will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Spikes will also once again hold a silent auction of sports memorabilia and entertainment experiences with all proceeds to benefit Coaches vs. Cancer. Over the first four SpikesFest events, the club has helped to raise several thousand dollars for Coaches vs. Cancer, a nation-wide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

“SpikesFest has come to be recognized by the community as a perfect opportunity for individuals and families to escape the cabin fever that sets in during the winter months here in Central PA and start to think about summer and the upcoming start of baseball season,” said Spikes General Manager Jason Dambach. “We’re proud of what this event has become and are planning to make it even more fun than it already is.”

Fans can keep up to date on all SpikesFest activities by visiting StateCollegeSpikes.com.

Need Something To Do With Your Stockpile?

by April on January 30, 2011

I have TONS of items in my stockpile that we will never go through, and that’s when things like food banks come in handy. You can get rid of some of the items that you won’t be able to use before their expiration date, and you can help someone else out that’s in need. It’s a win-win situation.

The local food bank is in need of certain items, so if you have an overflow, this is a great place to take them. Also, if your family or someone you know is struggling, you can head over here to find out how the food bank can help!

Not local to State College? There’s links on the website for other local banks.

Donations are more necessary than ever in our current economic environment. Please check their Needs List, or Donation page.

Need Cheap Furniture?

by April on January 29, 2011

Consignment sales and thrift shops are a great way to save some money and still get a great product. One of my favorite places to check for something I need before I go out and buy it is CentrePeace.

CentrePeace Used Household and Furniture Outlet has sofas, chairs, dinettes, coffee and end tables, lamps, appliances, dishes, TV’s, sporting goods, linens, toys, knick-knacks, etc.–all at bargain prices.

CentrePeace received the 2001 Pennsylvania Waste Watcher Award for outstanding recycling efforts.  CentrePeace collects over 70 tons of furniture and miscellaneous household items each year, keeping it out of the landfill and making it available at low cost to the community.

Project Restore- Centre County inmates learn valuable job, time management and socialization skills through working at our Used Household and Furniture Outlet Sale. The inmate volunteers are also required to complete the classes “Creative Non- Violent Conflict Resolution” and “Breaking Barriers” in which they learn to appreciate others’ points of view, assume responsibility for mistakes and identify and replace destructive patterns of behavior with positive ones.

Angel Food Ministries

by April on January 28, 2011

Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing food relief and financial support to communities throughout the United States. The program began in 1994 with 34 families in Monroe, Georgia (between Atlanta and Athens), and has grown to serve hundreds of thousands of families every month across 45 states. Angel Food Ministries crosses denominational lines and has spread the good news of the gospel of Christ through salvation tracts that are placed in each food order.

Blessings by the box

Angel Food is available in a quantity that can fit into a medium-sized box at $30 per unit. Each month’s menu is different than the previous month and consists of both fresh and frozen items with an average retail value of approximately $60. Comparison shopping has been done across the country in various communities using a wide range of retail grocery stores and has resulted in the same food items costing from between $42 and $78.

by April on January 20, 2011

We provide access to free primary and preventive medical and dental care to residents of the county that meet certain eligibility criteria. In addition, we provide referrals to specialists as necessary and make referrals to other social services for which our patients might qualify. From the moment a neighbor enters our front door to the end of their visit, they are treated with respect and dignity.

We provide medical and dental care, case management and necessary medications at no cost to qualified uninsured residents of Centre County. Physicians, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, social workers and other licensed clinicians volunteer their time to provide care to our patients.

Who does CVIM serve? CVIM provides services to residents of Centre County who have no other access to health care and whose household income is at or below 200% of the federal poverty level.

Please contact CVIM at 814.231.4043 to make an appointment or to see if you qualify for services, or check out the website here.
